LAKE TEGERNSEE, ROTTACH-EGERN

The cradle of Bavaria...

curated by

Korbinian Kohler, owner of Bachmair Weissach

For Korbinian Kohler, Lake Tegernsee and the cluster of resort towns that flank its waters (Tegernsee, Kreuth, Gmund, Bad Wiessee, and Rottach-Egern) is the cradle of Bavarian culture, concealing within its folds a clutch of standout boutiques that sell the kind of quality pieces one wouldn’t find anywhere else in Germany. The landscape also stands apart from the rest of the country, with pleasure-boats serving several points on the lake and hiking trails leading deep into the surrounding Alps. Here, Kohler shares his favorite tips:
  • SHOPPING

    BÜTTENPAPIERFABRIK GMUND

"In the paper-making business for over 180 years, Gmund uses all natural materials. I always recommend that my guests go there and pick up a box of the finest headed paper." Mangfallstraße 5

  • SHOPPING

    LIEDSCHREIBER

"It's essential to buy a bottle of schnapps from Liedschreiber, a family distillery that's also in Gmund." Schafstatt 1

    SHOPPING

    TRACHTENHAUS KARL JÄGER

"Among the essential things I’d recommend any guest should take home from Lake Tegernsee is a traditional Tegernsee summer jacket from Trachten Jaeger In Miesbach. They also sell the best quality Bavarian linen and fabrics, which I use at the hotel for our bedspreads and upholstery. " Bahnhofstraße 2, Miesbach

    HUTMACHEREI MARTIN WIESNER

  • ART & CULTURE

    BOOTSVERLEIH FRANZ REIFFENSTUEL

"Shopping around Lake Tegernsee imparts one element of Bavarian culture; the other is getting out into the landscape and experiencing it for oneself. For families, there are numerous opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, and sledding. But for children, there’s one ‘don’t miss’ recommendation I always like to make: hire a paddleboat at Bootsverleih Reiffenstuel, in Rottach-Egern." Seestraße 44 & 67

  • Bräustüberl Tegernsee
    DINING

    BRÄUSTÜBERL TEGERNSEE

"The best spot for a great view is the north side of the lake, from Gut Kaltenbrunn—a former stable, now a landmark, once owned by the King of Bavaria. The best time is early in the morning when you can watch the sunrise, and the southerly breeze is strong enough to attract a small crowd of kitesurfers. At the end of the day, there’s one very good, inexpensive local restaurant I’d recommend above the rest: Braustüberl in Tegernsee. They serve the traditional Bavarian dish Bierbrat'l, which is pork cooked in local beer. Schlossplatz 1
