PROVENCE

A thick buzz of crickets and cicadas, of wood crackling in the heat, and of bushes bristling - this is the sound of Provence.

DOMAINE DES ANDEOLS

Among olive trees, lavender fields and vineyards lies perhaps the most beautiful region in Europe—Provence. This ancient Roman playground has nourished dreams for indisputable reasons… while clear light pours from a vast sky, you wander rocky, herby landscapes, and drink wine under the stars without the need for a cardigan.

    GORDES

Gordes provides one of the most stunning views in Provence. The ancient stone village rises above the valley in painterly hues of honey gold, crowded with medieval rooftops and its cobbled streets—lined with boutiques and galleries—wind steep and narrow to its Renaissance chateau. Gordes is a great base from which to see the region's iconic sight, the 12th century abbey.

    ABBAYE DE SENANQUES

Three Cistercian abbeys called the Three Sisters of Provence were founded in the 12th century: Senanque Abbey, Thoronet Abbey and Silvacane Abbey. Drive (or hike) north out of Gordes, in this land of bories. Stretching out from the abbey buildings is a valley of lavender fields, which are in full flower and fragrance during the summer, and harvested July-Aug. The monks living there make lavender essence, water, soap and other products, which they sell in the abbey's fabulous shop. Gordes, 84220

  • DINING

    LA PETITE MAISON DE CUCURON

Glorious traditional French dishes are paraded to your white-linen-clothed table over the course of hours. Chef Eric Sapet spent 11 years working in a trio of multi-star Parisian kitchens, and his market-fresh creations are unforgettable. Head here for dinner after truffle hunting in Cadenet, a five-minute drive away, and you will have had a perfect day in Provence. Pl. de l'Etang,

    MÉNERBES

Ménerbes is best approached from the north, when it emerges from the sea of cherry orchards and vineyards. At one end of town is the Citadelle, a 16th century miniature fortress, and at the other are the cemetery and the chateau du Castellet. In between is a walk along the top of Ménerbes, through paths and alleys, the Place de la Mairie, and the many examples of 16th-17th century architecture.

    COLORADO PROVENÇAL

Its beauty lies in the combination of nature and artifice that created it. In Rustrel, ocher mining began at the late 19th century. The ocher-quarries extracted the magnificent pigments from the earth, carving a beautiful, multicolored landscape. Do walk along the bed of the colored river Dôa and visit the Chapel of Notre Dame des Anges. Rustrel 84400
