Since the early 1800's, Munich's Viktualienmarkt has been home to one of Europe's best outdoor markets. Originally used as a market for agricultural products, these days visitors and locals alike flock to it for their daily fix of pretzels, fruits & vegetables or sausages which the venerable New York Times food critic, Mimi Sheraton, described as worthy of a transatlantic flight. Of course, one can also find a great beer garden (it is Bavaria, after all) and if one times their trip to Munich well, it is possible to see the legendary "market ladies" doing their annual dance on Fat Tuesday.

Situated right at the Viktualienmarkt this is the only place that opens at 5AM. For this reason, you meet two kinds of people at Die Schmalznudel: the vendors of the market who have their breakfast there, and the party people who go there to eat after a boozy night! This is a huge restaurant in the former stalls of the Residenz, right at the luxurious Maximilianstrasse. Very hip with Munich's in-crowd as regulars, this is the place to spot German or International celebrities. GLOCKENSPIEL

Yes we know this is a widely known tourist destination, but how could we leave out Munich's famous glockenspiel! Located in the town hall, It consists of 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures. The top half of the Glockenspiel tells the story of the marriage of the local Duke Wilhelm V (who also founded the nearby Hofbräuhaus) to Renata of Lorraine. In honour of the happy couple there is a joust between Bavaria (in white and blue) and Lothringen (in red and white). The Bavarian knight wins every time, in case you are a betting man. Marienplatz 8
