... and traveling around Southeast Asia and immediately fell in love with the region. In 1983, he left his job as Vice President of Citibank and began working in the luxury hotel industry. In 2000, the passionate sailor, skier and trekker co-founded Alila Hotels & Resorts. Today the brand encompasses seven luxurious properties from India to Bali. "We are definitely reaching the point where luxury is not merely related to the physical circumstances of the rooms and facilities, but increasingly takes into account the unique details of the experience. Our guests are well- traveled, and they come to see and experience things in a manner that goes way beyond the confines of their villa or the resort. Our goal is to send guests home with spiritual and emotional memories, and not just souvenirs. And we’re always interested in the cultural and social aspects of a place and bringing that into our hotel, as well as making sure our hotel provides something for the community."
