FOUNTAIN OF THE SENSES

EXPERIENCING HOSPES

To stay at one of Spain's Hospes hotels is to indulge in a sensory feast.

"At Hospes, it all fits together—the food that our chefs prepare, the massages that our therapists give, the service in the hotels; all contribute to the guests’ sense of well-being and relaxation."

Since they opened their first property over 12 years ago, Hospes Hotels has reshaped Spain’s hotel market by restoring architectural gems to their former grandeur while translating them into the language of contemporary luxury. When it comes to decor, gastronomy, and service, Hospes properties are a veritable feast for the senses. The man behind the company, the ineffably elegant 48-year-old Antonio Pérez Navarro, spoke to us about his vision of timeless hospitality.

In little more than a decade, Hospes has established itself at the top of the luxury market in Spain. How has the company evolved? In May of 2000, we opened our first property, Las Casas del Rey de Baeza, in the historic heart of Seville, which blends the charm of a traditional Andalusian patio house with sleek contemporary design—a complete novelty in Spain at that time. Three years later we revived the famous Maricel, in Mallorca, which really generated a lot of buzz for the brand. Then came unique hotels in Alicante, Valencia, Granada, Córdoba, Madrid, and Villa Paulita, in Puigcerdà, which is a country estate near the Catalan Pyrenees.

The allure of Hospes Hotels has a lot to do with the concept of Fuenso. What is Fuenso? The name Fuenso encompasses two Spanish words, fuente (fountain) and sentido (sense). The combination can be understood as Fuente de los Sentidos (Fountain of the Senses). Our senses are responsible for our level of sensitivity, which is what provides us with the emotional capacity to be moved by something. At Hospes, it all fits together—the food that our chefs prepare, the massages that our therapists give, the service in the hotels; all contribute to the guests’ sense of well-being and relaxation. I love that we have local clients who plan a weekend Fuenso in one of our hotels just because they know that after two days with us, they will feel more balanced, revived, and ready to face their everyday lives after checkout.
